East Sikkim High Road Trip

Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, silk-route bends, monastery stops, and offbeat high-road villages.

NJP / Bagdogra
Gangtok
Tsomgo
Nathula
Zuluk / Aritar

Trip Essence

Built around the feeling of the place.

A high-altitude Sikkim route for travellers who want Gangtok comfort, permit-day drama, old Silk Route roads, alpine lakes, monasteries, and offbeat village edges without making it feel like a checklist.

Permit-Day Drama

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, and Nathula bring the cold high-road feeling: prayer flags, army roads, alpine water, and sudden weather.

Old Silk Route Edge

Zuluk, Thambi Viewpoint, Gnathang Valley, Kupup, and Aritar can turn the trip away from the usual Gangtok-only circuit.

Gangtok Base

MG Marg, Rumtek, Ranka, Tashi Viewpoint, and slower cafe time keep the route comfortable before and after the high-altitude day.

Route Rhythm

A working itinerary that adapts to weather and roads.

Day 01

Arrival to Gangtok

Route Note

Arrival to Gangtok

Pickup from NJP or Bagdogra and drive towards Gangtok through the Teesta valley.

Check in and keep the first day flexible for rest, permits, documents, and a soft landing into Sikkim.

Walk MG Marg, settle into the hill-town pace, and shape the next day around weather and permit status.

Day 02

Gangtok, Monasteries and Viewpoints

Route Note

Gangtok, Monasteries and Viewpoints

Explore Rumtek or Ranka Monastery, depending on the route chosen for the day.

Add Tashi Viewpoint, Hanuman Tok, or Enchey Monastery when the weather is clear and the pace allows.

Keep space for local markets, cafes, and unhurried city movement rather than turning Gangtok into a rushed checklist.

Return to MG Marg or a quiet viewpoint-style evening before the high-road day.

Day 03

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula

Route Note

Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula

Start early for the protected high-road belt towards Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir.

Continue towards Nathula when permits, road status, weather, and operating days line up.

Return through the same mountain axis, with stops adjusted around traffic, army-road timing, and altitude comfort.

Keep the evening light in Gangtok because the high-road day can be tiring.

Day 04

Silk Route Extension: Zuluk, Gnathang or Aritar

Route Note

Silk Route Extension: Zuluk, Gnathang or Aritar

Keep this as a proper route extension rather than a rushed same-day return: Zuluk, Thambi Viewpoint, Gnathang Valley, Kupup, Aritar, or Rongli are shaped around the final routing, stay plan, season, and permits.

Choose the higher Old Silk Route mood through bends and valleys, or the gentler Aritar side with Lampokhari, forests, viewpoints, and quieter settlements.

Drop timing or the next halt is fixed only after choosing the extension, so the route stays comfortable and realistic.
